Two seconds after Grace closed the sun room door, the enchanted broom lurched toward the glass and clattered against it. Thankfully the hit was not direct or speedy enough to cause any cracks.

“Come on, girlfriend,” Grace whispered to Lucky. “Let’s get out of here before it manages to break free.”

“Where to?” Lucky asked. She trotted after Grace, who led the way across the side yard.

“I want to go look at that table again, and the ceramic yard ornament that Annabelle was holding,” Grace said.

“Good idea!” Lucky picked up speed, now that she knew the direction they were headed. She didn’t seem to mind the rain falling on her fur, and she wagged her tail as she pranced along. “We’ll take a look at that yard ornament! Great! I love that plan. But… why?”

“Annabelle acted suspiciously earlier. It might be nothing, but then again, there’s a chance that her behavior holds a clue. I found her out here in the pouring rain holding that ceramic angel in her arms. I saw that same angel tumble to the ground earlier this evening when George knocked over the table. I thought it cracked in two, but it seemed to be whole when Annabelle had it in her arms. That puzzles me. Plus, what was she doing with it? Why come out into the rain to move it around? She gave me a bogus excuse, and I’d rather know the truth.”

“Yeah, it’s so weird she was out here in the rain. Most people don’t like being out in the rain. It can be fun, sometimes!”

Grace wiped water from her eyes and considered the fact that now she was soaking through a second outfit of the evening. Her just-dried hair grew wetter by the moment, which irritated her.

These troubles faded from mind as she approached the table, and curiosity took over.

“Here it is,” she said, reaching for the angel. She picked it up near the base and was surprised when the top half wobbled slightly. On closer inspection she saw a seam near the middle, where the top half, the angel’s torso, wings, and head, could be separated from the lower half. “It’s a container of sorts,” Grace said, as she set the angel down and separated the two halves. “Look at this, Lucky! It’s made to come apart, and it’s hollow inside.”

Lucky jumped so her front paws braced against the table’s edge. She poked her nose toward the lower half of the statue. Grace tilted it so that Lucky could see inside.

“It’s empty!” Lucky proclaimed.

“It is.” Grace’s eyes had adjusted to the darkness, but still she could not examine the inside of the hollow angel in the way she wanted to. She wished for a flashlight and considered going into the garage to get one. Then again, that would eat into her sleuthing time. The cover story that Oliver and Jane would provide bought her a few minutes, and that was all. If she was missing for too long, the murderer might begin to suspect that she was not upstairs changing after all.
